Crossover Exhibition

Boras, SWEDEN 2017

Call for entries:

A fabulous juried opportunity to enter this challenge to take part in the TEXERE Exhibition associated with the XVIII ETN Conference to be held in Boras, Sweden during September 2017.

The Textile Museum of Boras is part of Boras’ history.  Boras was once the textile capital of Sweden and the museum is now located in a former textile factory building from c1898, Akerlund’s Cotton Spinning Ltd.  It was circa 1900 when the textile industry began to flourish, making the city grow. 

The museum has 2 functions:

1)    as an industrial museum outlining the growth of the Swedish Textile Industry- primarily spinning and yarn production, weaving of fabrics and knitting of tricot, focusing on the mechanical history and that of it’s workers.

2)    And as s a museum of design, showing and collecting Swedish textile design from the C20th onwards

Entries from the following categories will be accepted:

Independent Designers

Textile/Stitch Groups

Students engaged in formal studies/courses (including Adult Learning)

Prizes will be awarded in the following categories:

·      Construction

·      Execution of Technique

Aims of the conference:

“To present  global perspectives of the different textile practices and their interactions with a special focus on sustainable creativity and innovations within Textile Art and Design”.

Background

Handicrafts are a huge part of Swedish culture – they are taught in schools  and considered as a valuable part of the Swedish community and weaving/knitting/embroidery are still seen as  a vital  part of culture.  Collections include textile and fashion costumes 1870 – 1920 and Swedish folk costume.  Textiles include Coptic/ecclesiastical and modern examples of embroidery , patchwork quilts .  Items showing development of textile printing technology include textile products and fabric sample books.  Also a representation of contemporary Swedish fibre artists esp of those working in  West Sweden. 

There is a partnership in the Textile Fashion Centre including the Swedish School of Textiles at the University of Boras as well as local textile related industry –

Brief:

To produce any form of mixed media textile response including accessories, embellished Jewellery and 3D pieces.   The judges will be looking for innovative design and work exploring the boundaries/techniques and processes relating to the theme of ‘Crossover’. 

Current textile industry is fast paced and continually evolving new techniques inspiring varied and intricate textile surfaces – however there remains a continued interest in maintaining handcraft skills to protect this heritage.  Remember that reusing and recycling and consideration of slow textiles are all currently part of textile practice.

Your personal pathways may ‘Crossover’ from Fine Art to Fashion, Traditional to Contemporary, Hand to Digital, the choice is yours – but whichever direction you decide to follow have fun and enjoy the journey…..

Sizes of completed pieces

3D pieces – maximum size to sit within 30 x 30 x 30 cms

2D flat pieces – min size A4 max A2

Larger textile pieces 75cms x 1.5 metres

All pieces to be finished and ready to hang/display with clear instructions

Written Statements

·      For individual entries, a personal written statement of 200 – 300 words must accompany your submitted work outlining your process and method of making

·      For textile/stitch groups a written statement of 300-500 words must accompany the submitted work clearly explaining the link to the brief of ‘Crossover’.  This will be used for both the exhibition and catalogue entry.

High Res Images

A high res (300dpi) image of the final piece(s) is required and to be submitted with the work – further details included on the submission form.

Copyright

This statement must be signed in order to allow Red Strand/Texere to use images for PR and any other promotional purposes as required for the length of the challenge.

Entry Fees & Schedule:

Non-member Independent Designer/Textile Artists   Euros 50 per person

Independent Texere members                                              Euros 30 per person

Textile Groups (minimum 6 entries)                                  Euros 40 per person

Registration Forms and deposit of Euros 25.00 must be received by end of January 2017

Submission of forms and work with balance of payment must be received by the end of June 2017.

Final juried selection and photography of work will take place end July 2017.

Successful exhibitors for Sweden will be notified by 10^th August 2017. 

All exhibitors selected for exhibition will be included in an exhibition catalogue.

Entrants will be responsible for insuring their own work.

NO late entries will be accepted .  The Jury’s decision is final

Return of Work:

Submitted work will be held for a minimum of 1 year after the end of the exhibition in Sweden for inclusion into further selected exhibitions within Europe including Ireland.  Further details to be announced

Return of entries work will take place by end of 2018.
